The Novice Mom

The Novice Mom tells the story of Ting, a new mom facing societal and personal pressures that lead to severe postpartum depression. Through self-reflection and cherishing her baby’s joyful moments, Ting finds healing and reconciles with her role as a mother.

Inspired by my own experience with postpartum depression, this work aims to bring awareness to the emotional struggles of new mothers and the importance of self-recognition. Using layered prints on kraft paper and acrylic-painted PVC, I blend tactile textures to evoke the complexities of motherhood.

The visual narrative follows Ting’s journey, juxtaposing moments of struggle—like sleepless nights and societal judgment—with the warmth of her child’s milestones. The materials and composition reflect the intertwined challenges and joys of motherhood, inviting viewers to consider the strength and resilience behind this often invisible role.
